Would you like to be a School Governor

Please see below for more information

We are currently advertising for two co-opted school governors.

Knightwood Primary School is an outstanding local school in Chandlers Ford where pupils, staff, parents and governors work collectively to uphold the school ethos of ‘Always Learning’

We currently have vacancies for two co-opted governors on our Governing Body and are seeking volunteers to join us – perhaps that somebody is you?

The role of a school governor is challenging but hugely rewarding. It will give you the chance to make a real difference for our pupils, give something back to your local community and use and develop your skills in a board-level environment.

School governors have three main roles.

  1. To set the strategic direction for the school. Along with the Head Teacher, it is the job of a governing body to set the school’s aims and objectives for development and improvement.
  2. To hold the school’s senior leadership team to account. By challenging key decisions and asking pertinent questions about the school’s performance, governors aim to guarantee high standards in education.
  3. To oversee the financial performance of the school and ensure money is well spent.

To fill our co-opted Governor vacancies, we are looking for people who:

  • Have an interest in working to support and challenge the school’s senior leadership team in securing the best possible education for pupils at our school
  • Are willing to use their own experiences of the wider world to help us ensure our school continues to be outstanding in all that it does
  • Are good team players
  • Have open and enquiring minds and show a willingness to listen and make informed judgements
  • Are not currently connected to the school either as a parent or employee/helper
  • Are willing to give about 10 hours per term to attend meetings and training (generally in the evening) and come into school once a term.

We are keen to ensure that our Governing Body represents the school’s wider community and has a balance and diversity of knowledge, skills and experience to enable it to be effective. We are, though, especially interested in hearing from individuals with a financial or children’s services background or with experience of building or premises management.

In return the role of school governor can offer you:

  • A chance to develop skills in strategic management by supporting the Headteacher and his senior team
  • The opportunity to work within a friendly team of governors to continuously improve our school’s performance
  • The opportunity to share your experience and at the same time learn new skills for life
  • A great sense of achievement in making a real difference to our school and seeing the children learning and developing

Anyone aged over 18 can be a governor. There is no requirement for you to have experience in the education system, just the necessary skills, character and time to contribute. Full training is available and governors are encouraged to attend regular development sessions, either in person or online.

The term of office for a co-opted Governor is four years from the date of appointment.

As we are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of the children, these positions are subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check.

If you would like to find out more and perhaps have an informal chat, then please feel free to contact me via the school office either by telephone on 02380 261900 or via the administration office e-mail: s.mussell@knightwood.hants.sch.uk
